Summary
Scores of French place names around Australia bear witness to a surprising history that few Australians know, hinting at just how close this continent came to being split between France and England. In fierce competition with her perennial rival across the Channel, France sent numerous scientific and commercial expeditions to the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the 1700s and 1800s. Only a series of untimely events, like the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, prevented France from consolidating her place on the legendary Terra Australis. This new edition of a popular book follows the exploits of famous explorers like La Perouse, and explains why the French, despite a significant presence on the continent, eventually withdrew, clearing the way for the British.
