RUGBY LEAGUE HISTORY

This bibliography is mainly concerned with the history of the game and not focused on individual clubs, games or players.  Some citations may have been included because of the more general nature of the coverage of the resources with the relevance to the history of the game.  2007 celebrates the one hundred year history of the game in Australia.   The amount of literature available is enormous and a search of the library catalogues of the National Museum of Australia and the National Library of Australia will reveal an extensive list of resources available to the researcher.

Although extensive, this bibliography is necessarily a work in progress, and it is hoped that readers will advise the National Museum of Australia Library of omissions or deficiencies. All such communications should be addressed to National Museum of Australia library.

Some hyperlinks are to subscription services available in the NMA Library. Readers at NMA can access them directly by clicking on the link. External readers can only do this if their institution also has a subscription to the relevant service.

In `Socio-historical perspectives' edited by M L Howell and J McKay. St Lucia, Qld: University of Queensland. Dept of Human Movement Studies. Player discontent was a feature in both cricket and rugby in Australia from 1900 to 1912. The rights of players came to the fore, with adequate financial recompense for loss of time from work through participation in sport and injuries, the sharing of profits and player participation in the control of sport being some of the major issues. In cricket the basic problem was the control of international tours, as up to 1912 the players had financed the tours and then divided the profits, reportedly not always equally. The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed an attempt to wrest this control from players and establish a Board of Control. Hill, Armstrong, Trumper and Noble were pivotal figures in the bitter fight, eventually lost by the players. Professional rugby began and was solidified in the time period, as players demanded more control of the game. Messenger, Giltinan, Burdeon, Miller, Hoyle and Smith were major personalities who effected this change, as was Victor Trumper, who was at that time involved in the cricket dispute.

This paper utilises Connell's concept of the 'gender order' to bring the issues of masculine identities, and the role that violence plays in the formation and construction of these identities, into the critical spotlight. Issues to be addressed include codes of player behaviour, the body, injury and violence, the subordination of women and women's sport, and homosexuality in rugby league's homosocial subculture.

"It is now over a decade since the Super League War confirmed all the worst fears of those who see contemporary sport as a wholly owned subsidiary of corporate commercial media. Rugby league has recovered on the surface with a unified league, open competition, and respectable crowds, television ratings and sponsorships in the usual places."--Web site.

Rowe, D, 'Rugby League in Australia: The Super League Saga', Journal of Sport and Social Issues v.21 (2), May 1 1997, pp.221.
Rugby league, the most popular winter sport on the eastern seaboard of Australia, has in recent times been thrown into turmoil. The cause of this disruption was the arrival in 1995 of what in Australia is called "pay TV." The effectiveness of sport in attracting subscribers prompted a struggle over the pay-TV rights for rugby league between Australia's two most powerful media proprietors--Rupert Murdoch and Kerry Packer. The result was that, after lengthy and expensive legal action, rival competitions are to commence in 1997. This short note traces the history of the fight for rugby league occasioned by the globalization, privatization, and technological development of the media. It is suggested that close attention to off-field action, especially in the media industry, is necessary for an understanding of the trajectory of contemporary sports.

Stewart, B, The Games are Not the Same: The Political Economy of Football in Australia, (Carlton, Vic.: Melbourne University Press, 2007)
Australians are intensely proud of their sporting traditions, and have always had a passion for football in its various forms: Australian football, rugby league, rugby union and soccer. But how does a nation of only 21 million people sustain the viability of four football codes at the professional level?||The Games are not the Same provides a detailed analysis of each code's commercial evolution, including a discussion of the ways in which major incidents and turning points impacted on clubs, players and fans. It not only highlights what and when things happened but also provides a conceptual framework that locates the incidents and turning points within a specific context, and breaks down their progress into discrete periods, culminating in predictions about their future progress.

The use of so called ‘grapple tackle’ in the National Rugby League has increased recently. The grapple tackle is a means of restraining the ball carrier and slowing the play the ball, by either placing the crook of an arm around his neck and wrestling him to the ground or, once on the ground, forcing the ball carriers chin onto his chest. This paper explains the relations of bodily harms occurring due to this grapple tackle.
