Note
"This book arose from a series of discussions that began among a group of doctoral students in the University of Cambridge's Department of Social Anthropology in the late 1990s." "The conference in which the majority of contributors to the book were first able to publicly air their analyses in concert was hosted by the University of Cambridge Centre for Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CRASSH)" --p. ix-x.
Includes bibliographical references and index.
Thinking through things challenges habitual theoretical assumptions about the relationship of things and concepts, objects and subjects, materiality and sociality. The book explores the place of objects in analytical strategies, and asks how objects encountered in the field might provide the terms of their own analysis - that is, the argument is that instead of slotting things into categories determined by a pre-existent theoretical repertoire, anthropologists should think through the things that present themselves in ethnography, towards the development of new theory. --book cover.
