Summary
The Victoria Archaeological Survey has only been in operation for about four years and during this time considerable debate has taken place on the question of the format of site record cards. Since a lot of site recording is done by amateurs the design of the card has to facilitate the recording of basic data relating to a site yet not be too technical. We are now in our third generation of site record cards and each new generation is an improvement on the preceding one. The current site record cards (W series) and this booklet are the product of this long and continuing debate. All the staff of the Survey have contributed to it in some degree and all are resigned to the fact that the site record cards will probably change again as we add to our experience and our needs and requirements change.::This handbook is not and never will be a substitute for teaching in the field. However we hope it will be a useful adjunct to it.
