Note Davis, Tony,
"Representation of deceased persons. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this publication contains the names and images of people who have since passed away."--Title page.
"In addition to the notification headed "Representation of deceased persons" found on the first page, Aboriginal readers should be aware that this book contains the names, stories and photographs of Noongar people who are specifically from the South Coast, Great Southern and South West areas of Western Australia, many of whom have passed away."--Page 2.
"The discovery of stone artefacts on a farm in the Great Southern of Western Australia sparked a small boy's interest in the Aboriginal past. Eleven years later, that boy, now a young man, saw an Aboriginal lady selling vibrant landscape paintings in the small town of Cranbrook, Western Australia. A year later he purchased his first Noongar painting from her. The artist was Bella Kelly. The buyer was Tony Davis. Some 18 years later, after having collected more of Bella's paintings from other sources, by sheer coincidence, Tony and Bella met again. A strong family relationship developed. White sails and charcoal begins with the peaceful, yet tragic, meeting of the Noongar people and first European explorers and settlers, on the south coast of Western Australia. Influences of early farming dynasties, the conundrum of the Carrolup Settlement, wartime secrets, coincidences between Noongar storytelling and historic happenings and a myriad of other unexpected events emerge from the purchase of one little painting." -- back cover.
Summary "Whilst this book acknowledges the art and life of Bella Kelly, the Carrolup era and the role of Geoffery Narkle in promoting Noongar Art, it also records numerous anecdotes concerning the Noongar people and non-indigenous Australians, in spheres of not only art, but many aspects of the social history of the southern part of Western Australia."-- page 3.
