James Turrell :
James Turrell is a senior contemporary artist who has worked within the creative realms of light and space for more than half a century, realising immersive and large-scale artworks that play with viewers’ perceptions. Essays by Chris Saines, Diana JB Young, Geraldine Kirrihi Barlow, Florian Holzherr. This publication will document Night Life 2018, James Turrell's architectural light commission for the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, and the most complex and valuable public art project ever realised by the Queensland Art Gallery I Gallery of Modern Art. The publication will feature photographs of GOMA's eastern and southern facades lit by Night Life 2018, and will highlight the work's full spectrum of colours throughout its 88-minute sequence over a single night. An interview with the artist and an essay connecting Night Life 2018 with Turrell's other architectural light works around the world will provide context for GOMA's commission. GOMA in a new light. As the sky shifts to dusk, James Turrell’s permanent architectural light installation Night Life 2018 illuminates the Gallery of Modern Art from within. Through shifts in tempo, hue and intensity of colour over 88 minutes, the artist invites us to consider how we’re affected by light. A decade after the opening of GOMA, this dynamic work realises the architects’ vision of animating the building’s façade at night.
