Summary The Panel’s brief for this Report was two-fold. It was to examine whether the NMA has met the expectations enunciated in the National Museum of Australia Act 1980, and expanded upon by subsequent statements about the vision for the NMA’s permanent and temporary exhibitions, and schools and public programs. It was then to make recommendations about the future development of the NMA. The Panel took this brief – in the main but not exclusively – to refer to the way the permanent exhibitions tell the Australian story, in its many facets; assuming that grand narratives are part of such a story, but so too is diversity, and a complex mosaic of social experience.
