Summary This report is the result of an archaeological and geomorphological survey of Lakes Wahpool and Timboram, north-western Victoria. The survey was undertaken in March and April 1981 in order to assess the likely effects that proposed salt mining at these lakes would have on archaeological sites. ICI Australia-Operations Ltd plans to construct a salt field to produce salt by solar evaporation from underground brine resources in the vicinity of Lakes Wahpool and Timboram. Most of this development would take place on Lake Wahpool and its immediate environs where the main effects would be from the construction of evaporation and crystalliser ponds, roads and drains. A salt stockpile is proposed for an area on the north-eastern side of Lake Wahpool. Excess brine from Lake Wahpool will be emptied into Lake Timboram.::Thirty-five archaeological sites and 74 isolated finds of cultural material were recorded around both lakes and are described and briefly analysed in this report. The relationship between the geomorphology and archaeology of the lakes is important for an understanding of both the significance of the recorded sites and the possible impact of development on archaeological deposits. The findings of the survey are discussed in terms of the overall interpretation of past environmental change and prehistoric Aboriginal occupation in north-western Victoria. In the light of these findings, recommendations for site management are made.
