Summary
Systematic archaeological research in Victoria up until 1982 has been confined largely to non-urban areas of the state. Within the past ten years major fieldwork programmes by the Victoria Archaeological Survey (VAS) have been carried out in the Western District, (Coutts 1976) north-west Victoria (Coutts et al, 1979; Simmons 1980), along the coast, and in eastern Gippsland (Coutts 1982 :14-26); and research by La Trobe University Prehistory Division has been concentrated on central Gippsland and the Otway coast. Sullivan's study of the Mornington Peninsula (Sullivan 1981) included some areas of urban development, particularly along the Port Phillip Bay coastline, but these made up only a small part of her Study Area, and no fieldwork was conducted within them.::Within the Melbourne metropolitan area and its vicinity, amateur enthusiasts and collectors have been active over many years in reporting the occurence of Aboriginal artefacts and sites but no detailed studies have been made. This activity is summarised and evaluated briefly below and the bibliography of this report includes all published accounts of activities and work by amateur groups and individuals with an interest in the Aboriginal past of Melbourne. It should be noted in passing that the results of this interest have for a long time pointed to the need for a detailed study of the prehistoric archaeology of the area.
