Summary
The Park covers about 447ha and is located on the shores of Port Phillip Bay about 15km southwest of Melbourne. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (M&MBW) is developing the Park in a way which will allow recreational use, especially of the beach along its southern shore, and at the same time maintain and where possible enhance its natural and cultural attributes. As part of the planning process the M&MBW, in consultation with the Victoria Archaeological Survey (VAS), prepared a brief outlining the requirements for a study of Aboriginal archaeological sites in the Park. ANU Archaeological Consultancies was contracted to undertake this study, the brief for which specified that the consultant should: 1. Conduct a detailed survey of all land within the Park; 2. Within the Park record the location, contents and environmental associations of as much exposed archaeological material as could reasonably be identified; 3. Provide an assessment of the condition of each site, and of its scientific and cultural importance; 4. Conduct archival research on the lifestyles of the Aboriginal people who lived in the Point Cook district prior to the arrival of Europeans; 5. Provide management recommendations for the protection of the sites and, where applicable, for their interpretation to the public.::The fieldwork for this project was undertaken by Katrina Geering under the direction of Philip Hughes, Joylene Rhall, a member of the Geelong Aboriginal Co-operative worked with Geering in the field. Geering analysed the artefact collection and the field data, and the final report was written jointly by Geering and Hughes.
