Summary The City of Doncaster and Templestowe has funded a six week archaeological survey for Aboriginal sites in the Municipality. Fifteen sites were identified, documented and interpreted. These consist of 5 artefact scatters, 8 scarred trees and 2 isolated artefacts.::An area of 44 555 m2 from each of 3 landscape units was effectively inspected. The 3 landscape units are the river flats, the steep dissected country and the gentle undulating country.::The visibility of the ground was poor throughout the area and it has suffered extensive disturbance as a result of cultivation, mining, urbanisation, floods and fires. These have all had adverse effects on archaeological sites and account to a large extent, for the paucity of sites.::The river flats are predicted to be the most sensitive landscape unit; the immediate riverbank for scarred trees and the terraces for artefact scatters. Undisturbed parts of the Municipality are the most likely places to find sites though sites will also be found under a variable depth of silt on the river flats. The steep country, where it remains undisturbed, may still have scarred trees on the slopes and scatters of artefacts on the ridge tops. For the most part, the gentle country is disturbed, but sites may still show up in places such as reserves. Ground disturbance therefore, is the way in which sites will be disturbed and destroyed, and management strategies are suggested which will check this.
