Summary
Gunbower Island State Forest is located in north-central Victoria, about 50 kilometres west of Echuca. The Gunbower Island State Forest archaeological project was initiated by the Echuca Aboriginal Co-operative (hereafter referred to as Echuca Co-op) and conducted by the former Victoria Archaeological Survey (VAS) and the Echuca Co-op. Funding for the project was provided by a Commonwealth National Estate Grant.::Three months, between May and July 1991, were available for the project. A four-week field survey component was specified in the project brief. The broad aims of the project were::-To locate and record Aboriginal archaeological sites within the Gunbower Island State Forest.:-To interpret the Aboriginal archaeology of the forest.:-To assess the condition and significance of, and threats to, archaeological sites within the forest.:-To assess the probable impact on Aboriginal archaeological sites of any proposed development within the forest.:-To prepare management recommendations for Aboriginal archaeological sites within the forest.::The limited amount of time available for background research (two weeks) has allowed only a short summary of relevant environmental, archaeological and historical information to be presented. This is contained in chapter 2 of this report. Where necessary, references have been made to more detailed sources of information relating to Gunbower Forest and the surrounding district.::Archaeological survey methods, results and interpretation are contained in chapters 3 and 4 of this report. A summary of the results is presented below. Chapter 5 contains an assessment of the condition and significance of Aboriginal archaeological sites and recommendations for their future management.
