Summary In 1947 Bonegilla was established as a 'Reception and Training' Centre by the Australian Department of Immigration. Until its closure in 1971, more than 300 000 people from all parts of the world passed through its gates. Since then Bonegilla has become a powerful symbol of a whole era of 'immigrant' politics, and for what has been tagged the 'the migrant experience'.
