Summary	R.M. Crawford was Professor of History at The University of Melbourne from 1937 to 1970. During these decades he built a school which through its graduates was to have a profound influence on the teaching of history in Australian universities and schools. In December 1998 thirty historians and former students gathered to reflect on 'Max Crawford's School of History'.
