Summary At the General Election held at the height of the Second Anglo-Boer War, a concerted attempt was made to use the poll as a means of forcing the government to discipline anglo-catholic ritualists who, their opponents alleged, were subverting England's Protestant Church. At the close of the nineteenth century, therefore, the battles of the sixteenth-century Reformation were fought again in this, the last election in Britain when religion was a major issue.
