Summary |
The book features photographs of mainly cave shelters, rock engravings and landmarks of significant cultural importance for the Wonnarua people and the people of the surrounding lands: the Darkinjung, Worimi, Awabakal and Dharug. The area is sandstone country and the large rock platforms, that are prominent on the ridges, are grooved with remarkable engravings of animals and figures that contribute to the dreaming stories of the region. Many of the engravings have been photographed at night so that the image is more easily seen and the landscape is seen in a different way. The cave shelters contain many hand stencils, weapon stencils and drawings in charcoal and ochre. The drawings show animals and figures. Animals include emus, kangaroos, wallabies, koala, snakes, eels, goannas and other small animals, perhaps echidna, bandicoot or spotted quoll. There are also photographs of axe grooves, water storage holes, and stone arrangements sites. Photographs of the landscape give a sense of place and some insight into the lives of Aboriginal people in a pre-colonial world. The focus of the book is the recording of these significant sites for education and protection. The essay, by archaeologist Dr Jillian Huntley, provides a summary of the nature of Aboriginal art sites in the region, mainly from Yengo National Park and the surrounding countryside, for an educational audience - secondary students, teachers from all areas of education and community members. |
